45 minInsulin and Diabetes
Many people with diabetes rely on insulin every day, and support workers often help with storage, prompting, monitoring and responding to low blood glucose. This course explains why people need insulin, the main types of insulin in general terms, and the devices used to deliver it. You will learn how insulin should be stored and carried, how to support insulin safely within the person's diabetes management plan, how to recognise and respond to hypos, high glucose and sick days, and what to do if something goes wrong. Two case studies follow a missed lunch after insulin and a mix up between look alike pens. The course builds knowledge only: you must be trained and assessed as competent for each participant by a qualified health practitioner. Duration: 45 minutes.
55 minMedication Management for NDIS Workers
Many of the people we support take medication every day, and support workers often help them to take it safely. This course explains your role in medication support, consent and independence, the rights of medication administration, Webster packs and PRN medication, and why medication used to control behaviour may be a restrictive practice. You will learn how to store and document medication, respond to refusals and errors, and manage medication on outings. Two case studies follow a weekend away and a dose that was signed but not given. The course builds knowledge only. You must also be trained and assessed as competent by a qualified health practitioner where required, and follow the participant's medication plan and our policy. Duration: 55 minutes.
45 minPolypharmacy
Polypharmacy means a person is taking many medicines at the same time, usually defined as five or more, including prescription, over the counter and complementary medicines. It is common among older people and people with complex disability, and it increases the risk of side effects, interactions, falls, confusion and medication errors. This course explains what polypharmacy is, why it matters, the warning signs of medicine related harm, and your role in safe medication support: following the plan, never adding medicines yourself, observing, recording and reporting. It also explains medication reviews. Case studies cover over the counter products, medication reviews and changes after a hospital stay. The course builds knowledge only: follow our medication policy. Duration: 45 minutes.
